His beak could open a bottle,
and his eyes—when he lifts their soft lids—
go on reading something
just beyond your shoulder—
Blake, maybe,
or the Book of Revelation.
--Mary Oliver
Poetry month is over, but I can’t quite let it go…How I love this book, the gorgeous cover with the painting of owls and embossed feathers that shine in the light. The illustrations of feathers inside are so real you feel as though you can touch them. Nature poems of hawks, hummingbirds, herons, kingfishers and gulls alternate with essays. Winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry, Mary Oliver has a tenderness and honesty that touches my heart every time. This book is beautiful down to its font. I reread the poems over and over, sighing with awe. I want to give a copy to everyone I love. #fridayreads
