Kelly’s Book Log: ULTRA PROCESSED PEOPLE by Chris Van Tulleken

The experiment was simple enough….On the ultra-processed diet, participants ate more and gained weight, whereas on the unprocessed diet they actually lost weight, despite having access to as much food as they wanted.

In honour of January, get fit or get dry or improve something month, I've decided to focus on non-fiction books. When I’m not reading poetry or novels, I like to read health books. I had asthma as a kid and have often wrestled with health issues so I gravitate toward this genre. I loved this title and was quite horrified by the sins described herein, especially those committed by big food manufacturers, whose goal is to create packaged food that is not really food at all, and that you cannot put down. Guess what: it’s not your fault you can’t stop binge eating “franken food.” It’s been engineered to make you addicted. Ultra processed food is having a devastating effect on our bodies, our children, our longevity, (for the first time in decades the lifespan of most North Americans is trending down) and eroding our day to day mental and physical health. This book was full of great information and will inspire you to avoid the centre aisles in the grocery store and return to your local farmer’s market, where you might purchase and enjoy the real thing, real food, which you can enjoy with the real people you love. Turns out, that's @doctorchrisvt main prescription to improve your health.
